On Bloom-Vale Isle, Remembering Zhang Cangshui
By LI Lizhong
Tr. LYU Wenpeng
Scholar born, wars made his mail full of stain;
Countless flags went forth, never came again.
He longed like Zu to strike the oar in flow;
Taiwan, how oft he climbed the peak to view!
Notes:
1. Bloom-Vale Isle: an isle off Mount Elephant in Xiangshan, Zhejiang. Its name means “isle of many flowers and valleys.”
2. Zhang Cangshui (1620–1664): a Ming loyalist general from Yinxian (now Ningbo), Zhejiang. He is honored as one of the “Three Heroes of West Lake” with Yue Fei and Yu Qian.
3. Zu: Zu Ti (266–321), a renowned general of the Eastern Jin, from Fan Yang (now Hebei). He is famed for rising at cockcrow to practise swordsmanship and vowing to recover the north at midstream.
